Sorting Music Videos into Genres

Music videos rarely omit performance aspects, as usually, some footage of the artist or band is featured, be it studio, live etc ..
Music videos also frequently make use of some narrative that suits the song, or seemingly random clips that suit the mood.
There is no definitive feature that all music videos have.

Sugarcult - Bouncing Off The Walls

The shots of the band are redundant, as we see shots of the whole band playing. We also see alot of close up shots of the lead singer, which is another redundant feature. The high amount of low angle shots with the band playing closer to it is common among rock videos.
The way Ryan Reynolds and Tara Reid are used in the video is a way to promote the movie "Van Wilder", which the song is also featured in. Its fairly entropic that the music video didnt just use clips from the movie, but a section made for the song.
The way we see both characters doing similar but contrasting things to get ready is redundant, and the split screen shots make this even more true. The male is seen acting more rash and cocky, which is redundant as it shows a stereotype for males.

A Day to Remember - "I'm Made of Wax, Larry. What Are You Made Of?"

The basic premise of this video is redundant, with the idea of the band taking part in a kickball. However, as they are facing children, the video holds some entropy, though very little.
The shots showing the band playing are redundant, as they show mostly the band jumping around energeticly is a staple of a music video of this genre. The high amount of cuts is also common.
The banter like body language is the usual for an informal, or less serious music video such as this. The exegerated facial expressions is another redundant feature.
The cheerleaders are shown to be merely sex objects, which is typical of a video targeted at primarily teenage males.
The injuries shown to be received by the children is entropic, as it is uncommon to see children harmed within the media.
The ending is also redundant, as we see the lead singer score the winning kick. This is the ending people would generally expect, as the lead singer is usually profiled more.

Haste the Day - Stitches

This video features the band playing, and seperate scenes related to the song. The part focusing on the band is highly redundant, as we see them playing in a desolate and abandoned room. We see a high amount of cuts, especially during the heavier parts of the song. Even the positioning of the band is redundant, with the lead singer at the front, the guitarists and bassists behind him, then finally the drummer at the rear. We see alot of close ups of the lead singer, and less of the rest of the band, which is redundant.
The other section is also redundant. We see a very tradational family eating a meal, with a teenager positioned outside of the conversation. This then leads to the father drinking and shouting at the family. This is redundant as many music videos aimed at teenagers feature some sort of abuse the lead receives, typically, in a relatable way. The way they look into a mirror is also redundant, as it is used frequently to suggest the character is emotionally unsettled.
The use of stitches in the leads mouths could be partially redundant, as it takes the song very literally. However, some shock value, and therefore entropic values, are shown when we see them remove the stitches.

blink-182 - What's My Age Again?

This music video is highly redundant. The device of "streaking" through the streets is fairly common, as is the typical blurry box covering "rude bits". Another redundant feature is the use of objects to cover the gentialia, along with items like a magnifying glass to look at a penis.
The other side of the music video, the shots of the band playing. The quick pans between members is a redundant film technique used throughout many videos to give each member some screen time.
The way the band members run through various tv channels is again a redundant feature.
A less redundant, but hardly entropic feature is the way the lead female is portrayed. While she is seen with an open shirt, the camera does nothing to suggest she is an item of sexual desire.
However, the video could be perceived with a sense of irony, in which case, it could be fairly entropic, in parts.

Video Skills Audit

1. Organisation skills
These are vital to media studies, and help support every other skill. Therefore, I should improve my organisation skills, as I usually leave it up to other members of the group.
I could improve this by taking the initiative and begin to arrange meetings etc before other people choose to. Its difficult to measure this unless you record who arranges and organises what, so to show improvement, I should also do this.

2. Creativity
Again, this is another important part of media studies, so it would be wise to improve this. Its also difficult to measure this, but by comparing my earlier media work to the final project, I will be able to tell whether or not I have improved creatively. As it usually takes me awhile to develop any initial ideas, I should also focus on building basic ideas and plans.

3. Continuity
Honestly, I lack the mind to mentally picture a scene, and this shows in my filming, as I rarely consider continuity prior to actually filming.
This skill is easy to improve, as I just need to work on developing my storyboards further, such as adding extra details.

4. Lighting/Sound
Both of these are fairly similar, and I could definitely improve upon both. Practise during filming with lighting equipment will help me to improve, just by seeing how different angles affect the film. Sound falls into a similar category, of being aware of the surroundings during filming.

5. Editing Accuracy
Although I have some experience with video editing software, I am unfamiliar with Adobe Premiere. Because of this, I should practise more, as the program is different to what im used to. Personally, I think all the skills about post production apply to me because of this.
